What is Mencia? Mencía, known as Jaen in Portugal, is a grape variety native to the western part of the Iberian Peninsula. Mencia, often pale and light due to farming in low fertile lands, has a new generation of winemakers rehabilitating old vineyards on the hillsides of Spain. I love these wines, so this is my Ode to Mencia.
This is a delicious wine with tons of bright red fruit and spice. The fruit was totally destemmed and fermented, semi carbonic, in a sealed stainless steel tank. This method of fermentation gives the wine a freshness that is perfect for the first course of cheeses and charcuterie. Aged in 100% Neutral oak. Great wine starts with great fruit. The care in farming really shows in this wine.
